Titan Arum

I dropped by the Melbourne Botanic Gardens today to see the Titan Arum, Amorphophallus titanum. It obligingly flowered on Christmas day and the main flower is still looking good though the central spathe is wrinkled. No smell of rotting flesh fortunately and the queue to view it wasn't long.

I wonder how much longer the flower will last, but I'm pleased to have seen it in the flesh (so to speak!).

Bloomberg- Solar Panels Silicon Oversupply

"Polysilicon has plunged 93 percent to $33 a kilogram from $475 three years ago as the top five producers more than doubled output, data compiled by Bloomberg shows. The industry next year will produce 28 percent more of the raw material than will be consumed, up from 20 percent this year, said Robert Schramm- Fuchs and Shai Hill, analysts at Macquarie Group Ltd."

Does this mean our solar panel prices will continue to go down, in spite of reducing subsidies? Perhaps after the next year we may have an industry that is mature enough (with Carbon Tax) to operate without any help.
