Fabulous, garden fresh tomatoes are one of my favourite vegetables. And now I have an overwhelming abundance of them. Lately, apart from working a lot, my days have been spent slicing, freezing, baking, making tomato chutney and sauce. My preserving pan is currently simmering away with the latest batch of tomato chutney, filling the house with its strong aroma of spice.
And still there are enough for fresh, ripe, tomatoes for salsa's and salad's.
This year my garden produced an abundance of the Italian Roma style tomatoes. A smaller number of cherry tomatoes, flavour bursting in the mouth also add to the mix. I haven't planted the old fashioned large beefsteak tomatoes for several years and the fancy cultivars didn't do at all well last year. This summer, however, must have been just right for my tomatoes. Enough sun, water and food for the plants
I pity those who just don't like the tomato. Life must be so boring and I wonder if there is anyone of Italian heritage who is not born with a taste for the tomato.
